GRAVITATIONAL LENSING explained ( part 2 )

GRAVITATIONAL LENSING : 

                   In the prvious post  GRAVITATIONAL LENSING explained ( part 1 )  we learnt about gravitational lensing by defining the basic terms like gravity and lenses. Now in this post we are going to learn about TYPES OF GRAVITATIONAL LENSING.

Types of gravitational lensing :

      ⇒ There are mainly 3 types of lensing 

           1) Strong lensing.

           2) Weak lensing.

           3) Micro lensing.

   

STRONG LENSING : 

        Here gravitational force is strong because the distance between light source and galaxy cluster is less. Due to this gravity is strong and results in formation of  multiple images of same star .    " Einstein cross " is one of the example for it , we call it quasar because we get 4 images of the same star .

A ,B,C and D are the images of single star and the centre part is the galaxy cluster which is lensing

                  The special case we get to know here is " Einstein ring ". when the source of light , lensing galaxy and observer comes in straight line , we see a ring formed around galaxy.
 

EINSTEIN - RING ( The light around it is actually the light of star which is behind the galaxy cluster )

WEAK LENSING :

           Here the we won't see anykind of multiple image  of single star . we see a distorted image of star . due to gravity of galaxy clusters the image of star is seen as deformed one.

MICROLENSING : 

         In this part  we don't see deformed or multiple image of star .  Here the lensing occurs due to the presence of exoplanets . This lensing is used to findout new exoplanets . light is bent due to gravity of a star(  LETS CALL IT 'A' ) and  the planet which is orbiting the lensing star( A )  will further bend it .

Due to this , amount of light we receive is varied and then decreased . This tells that something is there inbetween which varying the light . This is how it works .
